Keys to a Positive Work Environment
Keep your employees informed – The more information your employees receive, the less they assume; and... the less chance for miscommunication and useless rumors and gossip.
- Transparency – Don’t hide things. If the goal is to work as a team, access to information is essential to success.
- Honesty – Information that you pass on to your employees must be true. 100% of the time!
Balance criticism with praise. – Correcting an employee’s mistakes is necessary and deciding on disciplinary action is appropriate, but also understand that people need to hear the good things they have done as well. People are motivated when they hear at least two praises for every criticism.
Public vs. Private - Praise in public, and more important...criticize in private.
Don’t over-work – Emphasize the importance of getting work done on time, meeting deadlines, and being productive. However, don’t forget the human factor. Unexpected circumstances occasionally arise and flexibility and caring build loyalty.
Learn to Laugh – Laughter is good for you. Remember to smile. Tell an appropriate funny joke here and there. Remember, that if you are poking fun at someone, it needs to be yourself. We spend way too much time at work to not enjoy the people we have around us.

  • A positive work environment is a good thing. However, that is achieved by having a strong Boss. The ideas you propose would increase creativity and productivity. These are significant problems to The Boss. Let me address each of your suggestions.
    1. Transparency - Sometimes a Boss hides things because employees are "little picture" people and can't handle too much knowledge.
    2. Honesty - See #1 above. I shield my people from information that will upset them unnecessarily.
3 & 4. Balance criticism - I agree you should criticize in private unless you want to have a bigger impact. Praise is a waste of time. You praise once then they expect it all the time. Don't be a cheerleader.
    5. Don't over-work - A paycheck builds loyalty. I expect my people to do their assigned work... on time! Pondering the human factor can lead to coddling.
    6. Learn to laugh. A strong Boss laughs a lot. Some of the things employees do are just too funny. But you should always laugh at and not with. If you laugh with the employees they will begin to believe you want a relationship.

Keep up the good work Dr. Mimi.

  • Thanks for taking the time to write. While I do not agree with your comments, it is always good to hear "another point of view." It sounds like you subscribe to the Command and Control form of Management. Studies have shown that this method is less effective in bringing out the best in people.

Psychologically, it is healthier to work in a posive environment rather than in one that engenders fear.

    Readers, what do you think?
